PLASTIC FREE PEMUTERAN
Beach Clean-Up
This community-led initiative tackles plastic pollution in Pemuteran Bay, in collaboration with
Plastic Free Bali, BUMDES SARI NADI, TPST (village trash facility), and Pemuteran Village.
Unlike short-term volunteer efforts, this program offers a sustainable solution by creating jobs,
educating the community, and empowering local residents.
Launched as a one-year pilot project in June 2024, it has already made a significant impact in
reducing plastic pollution and ocean debris through daily beach clean-ups.
In partnership with local fishermen's organizations, we recruited and trained six "Trash Warriors"
who clean the beach twice daily — early in the morning and late in the afternoon.

Our team also designed durable, animal-proof bins and installed them at three collection points in the bay area. TPST staff collects, sorts, and weighs the recyclables versus non-recyclable waste. The Plastic Free Bali team processes the collected data for quarterly reports, which are shared with stakeholders. All financial management is handled by BUMDES SARI NADI, ensuring that 100% of funds raised go directly to the project. After the one-year pilot phase, Pemuteran Village and BUMDES SARI NADI will take over the project's management and fundraising efforts. This initiative supports eco-conscious tourism, improves the local environment, and fosters job creation within the community.
Achieving a plastic-free Menjangan Island requires collaboration with the villages within the National Park area. These communities, benefiting from tourism, have a vested interest in maintaining the island's cleanliness. By engaging with visitors to Menjangan Island and raising awareness about reducing plastic use, we aim to drive significant progress in minimizing single-use plastics and showcase responsible waste management across these villages.
